Erythromycin is a macrolide group antibiotic produced during the development of a microorganism called "Streptomyces erythreus." Its antibacterial effect takes place by blocking the formation of the peptide bond at the end of the peptide chain that grows through combining to the 50S' ribosomal sub units, whereby preventing the protein synthesis.
Bacteria that are under its spectrum of impact are:
Gram positive aerobes: Bacillus sp., Corynebacterium sp., Erysipelothrix rhusiopathise, Staphylococcus sp., (including those that excrete beta lactama that is resistant to penicillin).
Gram positive aerobes: Actinobacillus sp., Campylobacter sp., Leptospira sp.
Anaerobic bacteria: Actinomyces sp., Bacteroides sp. (except for B. fragilis), Clostridium sp., some Fusobacterium sp., anaerobic cocci.
Enterococcus sp., some Bordetella sp., Haemophilius sp., Legionella sp., Ehrlichia sp., Pasteurella sp. are mid – scale sensitive.
Nocardia sp., Pseudomonas sp., Chlamydia psittaci, Myccobacterium sp., Enterobacteriaceae, B. fragilis, E. coli, Klebsiella sp. are resistant.
Subsequent to oral use, Erythromycin is easily absorbed from the upper part of the small intestines. Erythromycin that is absorbed from the digestion canal reaches to the highest blood concentration and in the 4 – 6 hours subsequent to its intake, its concentration rapidly decreases. Major part of it is discharged by the bile while some part is discharged by urine. It is an antibiotic with weak toxicity.

Erythromycin is used for the treatment in hens against the Chronic Respiratory Tract disease (CRD), Air Sacculitis and Infectious Coryza infections.

In the cases that it is not recommended by the veterinary otherwise, following dose chart is applied.
